With a legacy of quality and flavor, the brand has consolidated itself as an undeniable reference in the global market for canned sardines and tuna.
Discover the journey, the symbolism, and the international presence of one of the oldest and most prestigious brands in Portugal.
The Origin of the Porthos Brand: Over 100 Years of History
When did the Porthos brand emerge?
Founded in 1912, Porthos is the oldest brand of Conservas Portugal Norte. Its production began when the manufacturing plant still operated in the historic area of Sesimbra, one of the country's main fishing ports.
Curiously, the brand's visual identity also has its own history. In the early years, the cans only featured the "Porthos" signature written diagonally. The famous and charismatic figure of the musketeer was only introduced to the packaging in the 1950s, instantly becoming a symbol of identity and trust for consumers.
But why the figure of a Musketeer?
The choice of the French musketeer as the face of the brand carries a strong social meaning. In the early 20th century, canned fish was seen as an essential food item primarily destined for the working classes and more vulnerable populations, due to its low cost, high nutritional value, and ease of storage.
The musketeer was chosen precisely to honor and represent the strength, resilience, and perseverance of the people.
